Management Counselor and Litigator Tom Lucas and Plaintiffs' Counsel Lisa Bertini present a survey of recent employment cases involving a variety of employment discrimination decisions from the federal courts and Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Lisa and Tom will focus on the Courts' decisions, and the significance of those decisions from both the Plaintiff' and Defense perspectives, and how those principles impact on day-to-day decision-making by HR professionals.

Lisa A. Bertini practices at the boutique employment firm of Bertini Law, PC in Virginia Beach, and specializes in employment discrimination work. She earned her J.D. from William & Mary Law School and her B.A. from Georgetown. During the first half of her career she represented only employers and companies in employment litigation. Once she opened her own firm she began to specialize in representing employees.

Ms. Bertini's practice is substantially dedicated to seeking to remedy workplace discrimination and to ensure that employees are treated in a non-discriminatory manner in the workplace, without regard to race, gender, disability, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation. She regularly tries cases in the federal court in Norfolk. She has served as Bar Council for the Virginia Bar and is active in Virginia Employment Lawyers Association, National Employment Lawyers Association and the Virginia Bar Association Employment and Labor Section Council. Ms. Bertini is the author of the chapter, Key Considerations for Plaintiff's Attorneys in Employment Discrimination/Harassment Litigation in the book Inside the Minds: Representing Employees in Discrimination Cases (Thomson Reuters, 2012).

Ms. Bertini has been named one of the Top 25 Female Lawyers in Virginia for five consecutive years, one of the Top 50 Female Lawyers in Virginia for five consecutive years, as well as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in Virginia for the past three years by Super Lawyers Magazine®. She has also been named among The Best Lawyers in America in the area of Labor & Employment Law every year since 2010. Ms. Bertini currently guest teaches a class on Mediation at her Alma Mater. She Chairs the Board of The Holocaust Commission of Tidewater which helps promote an understanding of the uniqueness and magnitude of the Holocaust, its unfolding stages, and its critical lessons.

Ms. Bertini is a member of the bar in Virginia, Texas, and the District of Columbia. She is married to Dr. Jack Siegel, and has two daughters; Zoe, who attends New York University, and Lucy, who attends the University of Virginia.
